We need your help with our Wish List!

Because the new Pink Ribbons Project space is larger and configured differently than our old space, we find that we need your help in acquiring some brand-new things for our brand-new space. These Wish List items are much needed and will be much appreciated and put to good use. If you can help, please contact our Administrative Coordinator Donice Reiss at Donice@pinkribbons.org.

Jazzercise!

Pink Ribbons Project was the proud beneficiary once again for Jazzercise for the Cure Halftime Performance. This year, Jazzercise raised a groundbreaking $25,000. We cannot thank you enough for dancing your way to the top!

Serve Up A Cure!

Thanks to all participants of Serve Up a Cure 2007! A very successful Sixth Annual Serve Up A Cure was held on October 27th, 2007. Many thanks to our steering committee for being so dedicated! A special part of the event is our Lifeline Salute - a pink clothesline from which hang colorful tennis skirts hand painted with the names of women who have been affected by breast cancer. We display these skirts wherever possible, as a tribute to these women, and to encourage awareness and early diagnosis of this disease. Drink Pink!

What? Drink Pink! is a brand new program from Pink Ribbons Project! It is an opportunity for kids and families to spread breast cancer awareness through the summer fun of a lemonade stand!

Where? Anywhere! You can choose where to set up your lemonade stand. Some good places are sporting events, community events, your front yard, and in front of businesses (but be sure to ask the owner first!)

When? Anytime! Lemonade stands can be set up as many times as you want all summer. Be sure to take pictures to enter our Drink Pink! contest. The most original lemonade stand design winner will be announced at Tour de Pink 2008 on September 8th.

Who? Anybody! This is a great event for the whole family!

Why? Everyone needs to realize the importance of good health--at any age. Pink Ribbons Project is dedicated to spreading the message of early detection to everyone! A staggering 1 in 8 women is diagnosed with breast cancer. If you know someone who needs a mammogram--insured or not--we have collaborative projects at The Rose Diagnostic Center or Harris County Hospital District.

How much? Free! Pink Ribbons Project will supply you with pink lemonade and breast cancer awareness materials.

If you are interested in having a Drink Pink! Lemonade stand, join us at our Kick-Off on Saturday, May 17th from 9-noon at Pink Ribbons Project Headquarters to pick up all of your materials.

Can't make it? Just give us a call at 713.524.PINK (7465) to set up a time to pick up your materials after May 17th.

Pink Power

Pink Powerprovides funding for mammograms, diagnostic work-ups, biopsies and other follow-up treatment for the medically underserved women in the greater Houston area.

Since 1998, the Pink Ribbons Project through it’s Pink Power program has collaborated with The Rose, a non-profit organization for breast cancer screening and diagnosis, and has served over 1400 women. Since most public and private funding for breast cancer is limited to screening the woman over 50 years old, the signifigance of Pink Power is that it creates a pathway to reach and serve the younger woman. The woman in her thirties and forties often encounters barriers to standard breast cancer screening and usually requires full diagnostic work-ups.

Establishing and maintaining the Pink Power program provides critical funding for The Rose, Harris County Hospital District and other area breast screening clinics to handle the special needs of this age group. For many of these women especially, Pink Power provides the entrance into screening and ultimately into treatment.

Spotlight: Harris County Hospital District Mobile Mammography Unit

In February, Pink Ribbons Project celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Harris County Hospital District Mobile Mammography Unit. Pink Ribbons Project was proud to provide Harris County Hospital District and this project the seed money in the amount of $100,000 at the end of 2006. This mammography unit will help HCHD expand its mammography services by 5,000 annually.

Pink Platter

Pink Platter is a celebration held during the month of October, served up on beautiful and original platters designed by some of Houstons most talented visual artists. Throughout the month, visit one or all of these fine establishments to see the resident Pink Platter and bid via silent auction on your favorites! The Platter celebration concludes at the end of October when all bids will be tallied after which the winners will be contacted. Also available for $20 at all participating locations listed here are dessert plates (with dessert!) painted by breast cancer survivors, their families and friends. All proceeds from Pink Platter will benefit the Projects continued efforts to aid the medically under-served women of Houston with proper breast cancer screening and follow-up care. The Pink Alive! program is a non-traditional support group that promotes healthy choices for those living with and beyond breast cancer. The program consists of postoperative exercise programs including Restorative Yoga, Yamuna Body Rolling, Origami, Belly Dancing, Meditation, Gyrokinesis®, the Feldenkreis Movement Series (mind/body awareness technique), Drumming, nutrition and journaling programs to manage stress and celebrate life, as opposed to a traditional talk-therapy support group. This group will be made up of women of varying ages, nationalities, socio-economic backgrounds and lengths of survivorship -- those surviving many years after diagnosis will interact in the same room with survivors in active treatment. We believe that this combination of “survivors helping survivors” will be both cathartic and helpful to all involved. This program will help survivors who are trying to regain control of their lives, minds and bodies.

Pink Alive is currently inactive, but a revised version will launch again in the near future.

Pink Aware

Pink Aware brings the message of breast health, self-care and well-person awareness to teens and adults, both male and female. Using dance and art as the vehicles to introduce the topic, Pink Ribbons Project presents a 20 – 30 minute dance demonstration to the audience. The performance is followed by a lecture lead by a volunteer medical professional be it either a doctor, nurse, nurse practitioner or a physicians assistant with a public health or oncology background. The audience is then lead in discussion about breast cancer, the importance of self breast exam and well-person check up, and the need to know one’s body.
